Lemmy.zip was created on the 10th June 2023 during the Reddit API Blackout.

Armed with nothing but a dream, a URL, and a vague understanding of Linux, Lemmy.zip joined lots of other fediverse instances and opened its doors to new users!

Two years on, we’ve done some really cool things.

We have over 4000 users! 🚀
We’ve updated Lemmy versions 19 times! ⬆️
We’ve shared the love with 1.6 million upvotes! ❤️
We’ve also disagreed with people over 180,000 times 👎

Did you know?

Lemmy.zip is aware of over 6,500 other instances and over 22,000 communities!!!

We also expanded our Admin team - Druid joined us in January 2025 and Gazby joined us in May 2025!

Server 🖥️

After our last server upgrade to a true dedicated server last year, we haven’t needed to upgrade it at the hardware level since.

That’s because its got 12 cores (20 threads), 64GB RAM, and a 1gbps connection, so we can force feed you Lemmy all day, every day.

We may have had to restore the server database once though…

(Although this is significantly better than the 6 restores the year before! 😬)

We’ve also done…

so many ZippyBot updates 🤖
enabled the image proxy to keep you safe from attacks ⚔️
argued over our internet girlfriend Nicole 💔
and then became detectives to figure out the Nicole thing 🕵️

What We’ve Learned 🧠

Hosting a Lemmy instance means hours of debugging. ☕
Community really is everything. 🤝
Backups are boring… until they’re not. 💾
